The fight for the world's food
Most people in Britain won't have noticed. On the supermarket shelves the signs are still subtle. But the onset of a major change will be sitting in front of many people this morning in their breakfast bowl. The price of cereals in this country has jumped by 12 per cent in the past year. And the cost of milk on the global market has leapt by nearly 60 per cent. In short we may be reaching the end of cheap food.

He would later LIE about many aspects of his personal involvement in the assassination plan, however.

US Vote Could Close 'School of the Americas'
The U.S. House of Representatives is poised to take what advocates are calling a historic vote this week to close the largest U.S. military training ground for soldiers from Central and South America.
The vote comes on the initiative of Congressman Jim McGovern (D-MA), who has offered an amendment to the Foreign Operations and Appropriations Bill that would prevent any U.S. tax dollars from funding the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation.

A Kurdish militant hijacked a fuel truck and detonated it near a military outpost Sunday, killing only himself and the captive driver, Turkish media and army officials said.

Judge Criticizes Warrantless Wiretap
A federal judge who used to authorize wiretaps in terrorist and espionage cases criticized President Bush's decision to order warrantless surveillance after the Sept. 11 attacks.
Royce Lamberth, a district court judge in Washington, said Saturday it was proper for executive branch agencies to conduct such surveillance. "But what we have found in the history of our country is that you can't trust the executive," he said at the American Library Association's convention.

McCain's Phantom Fundraisers
We just put out a press release noting that McCain "may be relying on phantom fundraising events to convince supporters his second quarter fundraising won't be as disappointing as the first." This comes out of Florida, where the Tampa Tribune notes that events appearing on John McCain's website apparently were never even planned
Hanging Around WTC 7
It was just after the first attack on the North tower, but before the second plane hit the South Tower, when Barry Jennings escorted Michael Hess to the World Trade Center Tower 7. Mr. Jennings recalls a large number of police officers in the lobby of WTC 7 when they arrived. The two men went up to the 23rd floor, but could not get in, so they went back to the lobby and the police took them up in the freight elevator for a second try. When they arrived on level 23, at the Office of Emergency Management they found it had been recently deserted, "coffee that was on the desk, smoke was still coming off the coffee, I saw half eaten sandwiches".
At that point he made some phone calls, and an un-named individual told them to "leave, and leave right away". Jennings and Hess then proceeded to the stairs, and made it to level 6, when there was an explosion, and the stairwell collapsed from under their feet, Mr. Jennings was actually hanging, and had to climb back up. They made it back up to level 8, where Barry Jennings had a view of the twin towers, both buildings were still standing. This is an important detail, as many debunkers have used Mr. Jennings statements out of context to claim the damage came to WTC 7 from the towers collapsing, not the case according, to Mr. Jennings.

Everyone we fight in Iraq is now "al-Qaida"
It's a curious thing that, over the past 10 - 12 days, the news from Iraq refers to the combatants there as "al-Qaida" fighters. When did that happen?
Until a few days ago, the combatants in Iraq were "insurgents" or they were referred to as "Sunni" or "Shia'a" fighters in the Iraq Civil War. Suddenly, without evidence, without proof, without any semblance of fact, the US military command is referring to these combatants as "al-Qaida".

Cheney's proposal had become a military order from the commander in chief. It provides briefings on what it calls “espionage indicators” supposedly aimed at protecting the data in question.

Great Barrington, in the Berkshire hills, a favourite summer getaway for New Yorkers, has started a monetary experiment by launching its own hyper-local currency, called Berkshares. It intends to cultivate the local economy by encouraging people to use a currency that can only be spent in the immediate area, so that the benefit goes to local workers and suppliers. You can get your car repaired, your bicycle fixed, your eyes checked and your cavities filled using Berkshares.
