Walter Mondale on Cheney: Answering to No One
After Sept. 11, when Cheney set out to create a largely independent power center in the office of the vice president. His was an unprecedented attempt not only to shape administration policy but, alarmingly, to limit the policy options sent to the president. It is essential that a president know all the relevant facts and viable options before making decisions, yet Cheney has discarded the "honest broker" role he played as President Gerald Ford's chief of staff.

Fed up with deadly drive-by shootings, incessant drug dealing and graffiti, cities nationwide are trying a different tactic to combat gangs: They're suing them.

Talk of impeachment gets louder
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was quick to quash any such idea after the Democratic sweep of Congress in last November's election. And the full-page ads from such groups as Why We Can't Wait, calling for the impeachment of the president, were dismissed as just more national noise from the Looney Left hardly to be taken seriously in the raging maelstrom of last fall's election politics.

But that was six months ago. Now, in midsummer and on the eve of a congressionally mandated assessment of the unending madness in Iraq, strange and ominous signs are beginning to appear in all sorts of odd and curious quarters, suggesting that this nation should not have to endure another 18 months of the George W. Bush administration and that, if we do, it well might be at the nation's peril.

US officials slam data mining
The US National Security Agency's data mining has prompted a sharp dispute within the administration that questions the legality of the program.

Gonzales' never-ending story
President Bush often insists he has to be the decider ignoring Congress and the American public when it comes to the tough matters on war, terrorism and torture. Apparently that burden does not apply to the functioning of the Justice Department.

Americans have been waiting months for Bush to fire Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Bush refused to fire him after it was clear Gonzales lied about his role in the political purge of nine federal prosecutors. And he is still refusing to do so - even after testimony by the FBI director, Robert Mueller, that suggests that Gonzales either lied to Congress about Bush's warrantless wiretapping or at the very least twisted the truth so badly that it amounts to the same thing.

Revealed: MI5's role in torture flight hell
In a remarkable interview for The Observer, British resident Bisher al-Rawi has told how he was betrayed by the security service despite having helped keep track of Abu Qatada, the Muslim cleric accused of being Osama bin Laden's 'ambassador in Europe'. He was abducted and stripped naked by US agents, clad in nappies, a tracksuit and shackles, blindfolded and forced to wear ear mufflers, then strapped to a stretcher on board a plane bound for a CIA 'black site' jail near Kabul in Afghanistan.

He was taken on to the jail at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba before being released last March and returned to Britain after four years' detention without charge.

Evangelicals voice support for Palestinian state
"There is a part of the evangelical family which is what I call Christian Zionists, who are just so staunchly pro-Israel that Israel and their side can do no wrong, and it's almost anti-Biblical to criticize Israel for anything. But there are many more evangelicals who are really open and seek justice for both parties."

Hagee and others are dispensationalists, Weber said, who interpret the Bible as predicting that in order for Christ to return, the Jews must gather in Israel, the third temple must be built in Jerusalem and the Battle of Armageddon must be fought.

Weber said, "The dispensationalists have parlayed what is a distinctly minority position theologically within evangelicalism into a major political voice. "

The Kissinger Pardon
Therefore, may I suggest that the President’s unrestricted pardon power under the U.S. Constitution be clarified and overhauled. No President should possess the right to pardon someone convicted of a crime, or of covering up a crime, when that self-same President could himself be involved and implicated, either directly or indirectly, in that crime. There is a nexus between Libby, Cheney and G.W. Bush.

Under the Guise of 'Security,' Travelers to be Tracked for 'Trade Union Membership,' 'Sexual Orientation'
The Washington Post reports that the United States and the European Union signed an agreement this week detailing the amount of private information the U.S. can obtain on EU citizens traveling to and from the United States, what kinds of information can be gathered, and for how long the data may be stored.

Privacy advocates in the U.S. and the E.U. immediately questioned the agreement's sweeping expansion of data mining of travelers’ private information, including such data fields as medical history, religious affiliation, trade union membership, sexual orientation, and sexual partners.

Rotten to the Core
The Democrats will not investigate 9/11, they won't do anything other than posture about getting out of the Iraq war, they won't question anything having to do with Israeli policy. Nancy Pelosi, that most "liberal" of congress people from San Francisco, has said repeatedly that "impeachment is off the table", even though impeachment is the one thing which might restore the balance of powers and the Constitutional rule of law. The Democrats have been just as bad as Republicans in carrying out false flag attacks. Hillary Clinton has said that, if she's elected president, the Iraqi war will probably continue until the end of her first 4-year term. She and Barack Obama have strongly hinted that they are for war against Iran.

Sex for the motherland: Russian youths encouraged to procreate at camp
This organisation - known as "Nashi", meaning "Ours" - is youth movement run by Vladimir Putin's Kremlin that has become a central part of Russian political life.

But the real aim of the youth camp - and the 100,000-strong movement behind it - is not to improve Russia's demographic profile, but to attack democracy.

Under Mr Putin, Russia is sliding into fascism, with state control of the economy, media, politics and society becoming increasingly heavy-handed. And Nashi, along with other similar youth movements, such as 'Young Guard', and 'Young Russia', is in the forefront of the charge.
